Understanding the Relationship Between Student Achievement and the Quality of Educational Facilities: Evidence From Wyoming Author(s): Lawrence O. Picus, Scott F. Marion, Naomi Calvo, and William J. Glenn Published By: Peabody Journal of Education -- 2005: [ abstract] Published By: Peabody Journal of Education Author(s): Lawrence O. Picus, Scott F. Marion, Naomi Calvo, and William J. Glenn "A growing issue in school finance adequacy relates to the condition of school facilities and the role that the condition of those facilities plays in student learning. Using the results of standardized test scores from Wyoming students and a detailed assessment of every school building in the state of Wyoming, it can be concluded that there is essentially no relationship between the quality of school facilities and student performance when other factors known to impact student performance are accounted for. This does not suggest investments in school facilities are not important-all children are entitled to attend school in safe, clean, and appropriate educational environments. However, policymakers should be aware that investments in facilities by themselves are unlikely to improve student learning."

The Effects of School Facility Quality on Teacher Retention
in Urban School Districts Author(s): Mark Schneider and Mary Filardo Published By: Building Education Success Together (BEST) -- 2004: [ abstract] Published By: Building Education Success Together (BEST) Author(s): Mark Schneider and Mary Filardo The attrition of both new and experienced teachers is a great challenge for schools and school administrators throughout the United States, particularly in large urban districts. Because of the importance of this issue, there is a large empirical literature that investigates why teachers quit and how they might be better induced to stay. Here we build upon thisliterature by suggesting another important factor: the quality of school facilities. We investigate the importance of facility quality using data from a survey of K-12 teachers in Washington, D.C. We find in our sample that facility quality is an important predictor of the decision of teachers to leave their current position.

Facilities Information Management: A Guide for State and Local Education Agencies Published By: National Center for Education Statistics -- 2003: [ abstract] | Published By: National Center for Education Statistics This Guide has been developed to provide a framework for decision makers, school facility managers, and the public to identify a basic set of school facilities data elements, including definitions that will meet their information needs.
There are 96,000 public schools in the United States governed by 17,000 school districts in 50 states and the extra-state jurisdictions. Facilities planners and school district officials at the local level often do not have data systems that support the complex and demanding responsibilities of decision-making, planning, management, oversight, and funding of school buildings. Moreover, even when facilities data at the building level are maintained at the school or district level, these data may not be available to state education agencies. Thus, there is a “missing link” between the information maintained by facilities managers in school districts and the information needed for policy planning and implementation at the state and national level.
